Stephen A. Dantes

Lead Developer

Stephen A. Dantes created Kwéyòl Dictionary to give iOS users a Kwéyòl dictionary comparable to the versions already available on Android. As a speaker of Saint Lucian Kwéyòl, he reviewed the dictionary’s content himself and added many words he knew growing up that are not yet included in the Government’s official dictionary.

Questions, corrections and suggestions are always welcome at dictionary@stephendantes.net.

How the dictionary was made

  1. Word list. AI was used to generate an initial list of Kwéyòl words. That list was cross-referenced against the official Kwéyòl dictionary and checked by a Kwéyòl specialist, the developer.
  2. Definitions and examples. English definitions were written for every entry, along with original Kwéyòl example sentences and their English translations.
  3. French and Spanish. AI was used to translate the English definitions and examples into French and Spanish.
  4. Sentence-by-sentence review. Every Kwéyòl sentence and its English translation was reviewed by the specialist for accuracy, and to make sure the examples do not duplicate those in the official dictionary.
  5. Words from home. Many words the developer knew growing up, but which are not yet in the official dictionary, were added.

Reference

The following dictionary was used as a reference for words the developer did not know and for checking what AI got wrong:

Kwéyòl Dictionary. Compiled by Paul Crosbie, David Frank, Emanuel Leon and Peter Samuel. Edited by David Frank. Ministry of Education, Government of Saint Lucia, Castries, Saint Lucia.

Sayings and proverbs

The Kwéyòl sayings and proverbs in the app were collected and preserved by the late His Excellency Sir Emmanuel Neville Cenac, former Governor-General of Saint Lucia, Minister for Foreign Affairs, President of the Senate, and Leader of the Opposition.
